What drives a story forward? Conflict? Interesting characters? Beauty? Always a good question to ask. Although I don’t think the answer can be 100% universal, Lisa Cron in her book Wired for Story makes a good case for a possibly complex answer of why certain ideas work better than others. More than that, she outlines some interesting ideas that are useful to situate the conflict within a logical storyline as well as explore that same conflict. But an even better question to ask is why do you keep reading or listening to something? In my opinion, this excerpt is particularly insightful on that topic.
